About us

If you’ve been researching a gorilla safari, you’ve probably come across two different terms being used almost interchangeably “gorilla trekking” and “gorilla habituation experience.” They are not the same thing, and the difference matters both for your itinerary and your budget. Here’s exactly how they compare.

The short answer

Standard gorilla trekking gives you one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family one that’s completely comfortable around humans, having gone through years of daily contact with rangers and researchers. The Gorilla Habituation Experience gives you up to four hours with a family that is still going through that process, alongside the researchers and trackers actually doing the habituating.

Both happen in Uganda. Both require a permit. But they are built for different kinds of travelers.

Standard gorilla trekking

This is the classic, most-booked version of the experience, available in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

  • Duration with gorillas:Exactly one hour, once the family is located
  • Group size:Maximum 8 visitors per gorilla family, per day
  • Cost:USD 800 (Uganda, peak season) or USD 1,500 (Rwanda)
  • Where:Any habituated family across Bwindi’s four sectors, Mgahinga, or Volcanoes National Park
  • Who it’s for:Every first-time trekker, and honestly, most repeat visitors too. One hour is enough to watch a family properly interact, feed and move as a group.

The families you visit on a standard trek have typically been habituated for years. They’re calm, predictable in their tolerance of visitors, and the encounter feels safe and settled this is the gold-standard gorilla experience most people picture when they imagine the trip.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience

This is a different product entirely, and it’s currently offered in only one place: Bwindi’s Rushaga sector in Uganda. Rwanda does not currently offer an equivalent habituation product  if this is the experience you’re after, Uganda is your only option.

  • Duration with gorillas: Up to four hours
  • Group size: Smaller and more exclusive than standard treks, with limited daily permits
  • Cost: USD 1,500 per person
  • Where: Bwindi’s Rushaga sector only
  • Who it’s for:wildlife photographers, researchers and travelers who want real depth over a quick, structured encounter

Instead of a family that already sees dozens of tourists calmly, you’re with a semi-habituated group still adjusting to consistent human presence, working alongside the trackers and researchers doing that habituation work day by day. You’ll observe more natural behaviour, and you’ll pick up far more about gorilla ecology, behaviour patterns, and the conservation work behind the scenes than a standard one-hour trek allows.

Which one should you choose?

If this is your first gorilla trek, book the standard experience. It’s less expensive, more widely available across both countries, and a full hour with a calm, fully habituated family it is genuinely unforgettable and there’s no need to “upgrade” to get a meaningful encounter.

Consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience if: – You’ve already done a standard trek and want something deeper – You’re a photographer who wants more time and more natural behaviour to work with – You have a specific interest in conservation research and want to understand the habituation process itself – Your budget comfortably allows for the higher permit cost and you want it as the centrepiece of your trip, not just one activity among several
